While Florida normally is the “Sunshine State,” an unusual weather pattern made for a challenging tournament schedule at The Players. However, the PGATOUR and the entirety of the field, was able to do some great work navigating through delays and fronts to still get in the 72 holes of tournament golf. The Monday finish crowned Cameron Smith as champion and victor of the $3.6M winner’s share. This was Cam’s second victory in the calendar year as he was victorious earlier this year at Kapalua where he captured the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions. From a Team Troon standpoint, Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson made noise early after solid -3 starts (following completion of their second rounds). However at the end of regulation, Alex Noren was low Team Troon member finishing with a final round 69 and -3 total to finish T26. Complete round by round totals for the low three Team Troon players were as follows:

  • T26 Alex Noren 69-75-71-69 = 284 / -4
  • T33 Justin Thomas  72-69-72-72 = 285 / -3
  • T70 Bubba Watson 73-68-78-76 = 295 / +7

The PGA TOUR continues its Florida Swing with the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook near Tampa. Like last week, all six Team Troon members are in the field at Valspar including Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland, Matt Kuchar, Alex Noren, Bubba Watson and Matt Fitzpatrick.

Fun fact: Matt Fitzpatrick’s younger brother (and Wake Forest senior) Alex Fitzpatrick, is in the field competing against his older brother. That sibling rivalry will be fun to watch…as will the fireworks from the entirety of Team Troon.

Ruixin Liu was the winner of the Carlisle Arizona Women’s Golf Classic in 2021 (defeating world #1 amateur Rose Zhang  on the second playoff hole). Past champions of this event include Sarah White, Liv Cheng, Hannah O’Sullivan, Alena Sharp, and Jaclyn Sweeney. Seeking a second title in the same event, Liu (2021), White (2020), and Sharp (2014) are all registered in this year’s field. O’Sullivan won the tournament in 2015 as Longbow Golf Club’s player exemption that year as a fifteen-year-old amateur, posting a score of fifteen under par.
